Judith “Judy” Scherer

The daughter of a long-time clothing model, Judith “Judy” Scherer had a keen eye for sartorial splendor.

“She knew from her mom all about clothing style, what to wear and when to wear it,” her son, Gordie Scherer, said.

She proved that during her latest hospital stays when she saw him wearing a seersucker suit – normally not worn after Labor Day – a day after the holiday. He suspected she’d notice. She did.

“That’s my mom,” her son said.

Judy Scherer, 74, of Covedale, died September 29, 2013

She grew up in Westwood and lived all of her life on Cincinnati’s west side, graduating from Western Hills High before earning a degree at the University of Cincinnati and returning to her high school to teach English and Spanish. One of her notable students there was current Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Ruehlman.

She was the daughter of Cincinnati Gas & Electric vice president of operations Willard “Bud” Myers, and her local clothing model mother, Bernice.

As a child, Judy Myers worked at her grandfather’s Downtown pharmacy business, Blankenbuehler’s Pharmacy, where, during Prohibition, bathtub spirits were known to be brewed in secret.

As an adult, she met and married Gordon Scherer who later became a State Representative and long-time lobbyist, including for Hamilton County government. He died in 2003.

Despite her husband’ notoriety, she carved out her own niche. In addition to her teaching career, she also was an early proponent of going green. In the 1970s, before it became popular, she was active in composting and recycling and created her own organic garden as a long-time member of the Western Hills Garden Club.

“When recycling became readily available, her garbage was one plastic grocery garbage bag each week,” Gordie Scherer said. “Everything was recycled or composted. She was way ahead of the curve on those kinds of things. She was an early environmentalist.”

On addition to her son, Gordie, of Covedale, she is survived by former daughter-in-law, Patricia Scherer of Westwood, who was a rock of support during Mrs. Scherer’s illness. She also is survived by grandchildren Christopher Gordon Scherer, of Clifton, and Caroline Suzanne Scherer, of Westwood. She also is survived by sister and brother-in-law Janie and Craig Jud, of Bridgton, Maine, nephew Seth Jud and niece Erin Dube; sister and brother-in-law Suzanne and Michael Kitei of Sante Fe, New Miexico; nephew John Louiso and his wife, Mimi, of Atlanta; nephew Todd Louiso and his wife, Sarah, of Los Angeles, California, and; Mrs. Scherer’s aunt Myrtle, and cousins Randi, Scott, Debbie, Cindy and Ann.

She also was an avid reader, the consummate teacher and traveled throughout Europe. In her later years, she became interested in fitness and Pilates. She also sold Fuller Brush items for 20 years, donating the proceeds to support the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scherer was preceded in death by son, Steven. Memorials may be made to Cystic Fibrosis research, the Westwood United Method Church of Vitas Hospice.

Funeral Services will be held on October 5th  11:00 A.M. at the Westwood United Methodist Church, 3460 Epworth Ave., 45211.  A reception to follow at church unitl 1:30 P.M.  Interment will follow the reception.
