Tributes & Condolences

My eulogy to mom read at the cemetery yesterday. Today we are here to say good bye to the physical being of my mother, Patricia Sweitzer, most loved grandmother of 22 grandchildren, beloved mother to my sisters and brother and me, and wife to my father for 67 years. We are all gathered here at her final earthly resting place to celebrate her life, to say our goodbyes, to remember her, as many happy memories of our past have come flooding back to all of us over this past difficult week. When I think of mom, my first immediate thought is kind, loving and always ready to listen to you. She liked to have fun and a smile on her face was normal. I think of her & my dad and how they loved each other, even with their "special" bickering that dad would usually instigate just to get her going, ending by her saying Oh Sweitzer and calling him some not so nice name. And we would all kind of snicker, thinking, they are so cute. I remember mom joking that she surely would go to heaven just for putting up with dad for however many years they were married at the time. I remember our childhood and all the time we spent at grandma's Sunny Hollow with cousins, aunts & uncles and other familiar faces always around. Card playing, baseball games and music were always part of our family life. Mom loved to sing and we all have special memories of those happy times. I think of Christmases past, easter egg hunting, birthday celebrations, with all the family, grandkids and later great grandkids. Everyone always happy to go to grandma & grandpa's house. There is nothing more difficult than saying good bye to your lifelong friend and spouse as dad has had to do or saying goodbye to your mother, the woman who took care of you when you needed her to throughout your life. But we have much to be thankful for as we reflect on our past. We have all been blessed to have her with us for so many years, not everyone is that lucky. Mom got in a lot of living during her 87 years. Over the past several years, particularly the last year, her dementia began to take her away from us. In some ways it has been like losing her twice. But now we all can rest easy knowing she will no longer suffer, that she will no longer have her body and mind ravished by this horrible disease. Dad, I say to you now, thank you for being a loving, caring husband to our mother and know that we are all here for you now. We stand together in strength with love and support for each other as we go thru this overwhelming loss, knowing that mom will live on thru all our memories. Now...mom...I just want to say go play some poker with Grandma and Diane....they've been waiting for a good game. We all love you. Rest in peace.

Aunt Patty was always there with a genuine understanding of what was going on in my life. She had a genuine compassion and was able to show me the brighter side of things. A smile and some laughter were always a part of any time we spent together. My prayer for Debbie, Tom, Kim, and Lynne: I understand this is a great loss. Time will be your friend and your memories, your greatest comfort. Peace be with you Uncle Tom. You are all loved with an everlasting love. Dona Sue ❤
